What BMW Has in Store for the New M5

BMW has really changed their tune in terms of vehicle upgrades during the past few years, says Brian Watts, Global Marketing Director for BMW's M Brand. As Watts put it, "Two years ago, we would've focused on straight line acceleration. Now we no longer limit it to one single factor."1 However, performance upgrades are still at the forefront of the luxury automakers new M brand lineup.
Though BMW recently showed off the prototype for the next-gen M5 at the Laguna Seca Raceway, just outside Monterey, California, they have yet to confirm what model year the new BMW M5 Prototype will fall under. So, while we could be seeing it as soon as 2013, it could also be years off from production.
What we do know is that the new M5 will house a 4.4-liter V8 engine, putting out 560-hp and 500 lb.-ft. of torque, an increase of 10 percent and 20 percent for horsepower and torque respectively. The redesigned M5 will also be outfitted with Valvetronic technology for and anticipated 30% increase in fuel economy, and Active Differential for shifting torque between right and left rear wheels, resulting in better traction.
